Philippines

We attnded the 27th Pinoy Pork challenge in Manila which attracted up to 600 attendees, quite an impressive turnout. A great opportunity to meet up and get industry updates.

Earlier this month we visited the AgriLink show in Manila, we had a couple of good days meeting many friends, customers and customers for the future, although this show isn’t very focused on the pig industry many pig producers visited the show. On Day 1 of the show Golden Harvesta/Genesus Philippines sponsored lunch for the annual National federation of Hog Farmers COP meeting.

With the goal of detecting and preventing the spread of diseases like ASF, PBBM spearheaded the Department of Agriculture’s Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion, which is also known as the INSPIRE program. To date, more than 430 farmers cooperatives and associations with more than 13,000 members and an estimated 27,500 individual farmers have benefitted from this project.

The completion of Phase One of the safety and efficacy trials for the ASF vaccines. The Bureau of Animal Industry has found it to produce sufficient antibodies and to be safe for use. And as it stands, the Philippine FDA is on track to issue a certificate of product registration for these vaccines while Phase Two trials are underway.

This ASF vaccine is a ray of hope to swine farmers in the Philippines and around the World.

Thailand

Free falling pig prices in Thailand.

Live pig prices in Thailand have fallen below THB 50/kg (USD 1.38/kg) in the second week of October, making it the lowest level in 10 years.

Massive smuggled frozen pork remains the main culprit for the plunge of pork and live pig prices in Thailand.

Despite the price has fallen far below the production cost of about THB 78/kg (USD 2.15/kg), Thailand’s major pig producers are expanding their breeding herds without hesitation with hope that smaller producers will be taken out of business sooner or later.

CPF lost THB 792 (USD 21.82) in the second quarter of the year and brokerage firm Pi Securities estimated that CPF is expected to lose over THB 4281 million (USD 117.93) in the third quarter of 2023 from a profit of THB 5108 (USD 140.72) in the same period last year.

It said an oversupply of pork and pigs due to smuggling and herd expansions continued to suppress the profit of CPF, despite production cost reducing from lower prices of grains and oilseeds.

However, Pi Securities believes that pork and broiler meat prices would gain higher in the last quarter of 2023 as it is the peak of tourist season in Thailand. This should lead to rising meat demand in the country.

Thailand tourism usually peaks in the last quarter of the year which we hope will bring a much needed boost in demand for pork and other meats,
